The island of
Thassos is located in the north
of the Aegean Sea, opposite the
town of Kavala (ancient Neapolis).
15 km north of Kavala we find the
archeological sites of the ancient
city of Philippi and approximately
200 km west of Kavala is Thessaloniki.
Thassos is reached
by ferry boat from Kavala or Keramoti,
a seaside village close to the international
airport of Kavala.
|
|
Thassos is a beautiful
island with a population of almost
16000 inhabitants. The main occupation
of the Thassian people is tourism
but it also has income from the
quarrying of marble, the production
of agricultural products such as
olive oil, honey etc. and the timber
trade. Since it is so closely situated
to the main land (only 45 min.-
1:30 hrs by flying dolphin or ferry)
it is not an island that is empty
in wintertime.
|
|
Besides visiting
beautiful beaches all around the
island, visitors can engage themselves
in other activities such as hiking,
horse riding, boat trips or daily
excursions to the main land.
Thassos offers
many hotels and other accommodation
as well as the traditional greek
tavernas with local cuisine.
